The American pianist and singer Johnny O’Neal is one of those jazzmen who is revered by his peers yet hardly known to the general public. He was a partner of Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Brown in the 1980s, and even became a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers from 1982 to 1985. He is also to be seen in Taylor Hackford’s film Ray, in which he plays the legendary Art Tatum. One of New York’s best-kept secrets!
